Education loans for public universities in Europe
Because tuition at a public university is low, the loan mainly funds the living money the visa requires. MastersHelp compares offers from public-sector banks, private banks and NBFCs, prepares the file and follows it to disbursement. Loan help is part of the service, at no additional charge.
One bank is one offer. Several banks are a choice.
Rates, collateral requirements and sanction times differ between lenders for the same student. A student who walks into one branch receives that branch's terms. MastersHelp places the file with several lenders and the student chooses the best sanction.
| Lender type | Examples | Interest rate (approximate) | Collateral | Maximum amount (typical) | Sanction time | Suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Public-sector banks | SBI (Global Ed-Vantage), Bank of Baroda, Union Bank, Canara Bank | 9.2% to 10% (with collateral) | Usually required above ₹7.5 lakh (property, fixed deposit) | ₹1.5 crore and above with collateral | 3 to 6 weeks | Families with collateral who want the lowest rate and Section 80E benefit |
| Private banks | ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC Credila, IDFC First | 10% to 12% (without collateral) | Often unsecured for recognised universities | ₹40 lakh to ₹1.5 crore unsecured | 2 to 3 weeks | Students without collateral and with a salaried co-applicant |
| Non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) | Avanse, Auxilo, InCred, Prodigy Finance | 10% to 12% (without collateral) | Unsecured; some lend on the student's profile alone | Up to ₹1.5 crore | 1 to 2 weeks | Fast sanction, limited income documents, or a university not on bank lists |
| Government schemes | Vidya Lakshmi portal, PM Vidyalaxmi, state corporations | Subsidised or interest-free during study, by eligibility | Varies | Scheme limits apply | 4 to 8 weeks | Students meeting income or category criteria |
Rates and limits are approximate and depend on the student's profile, co-applicant and the lender's approval.
Proof of funds by country
Every country accepts a loan sanction or a disbursed balance as proof of funds, provided the wording, amount and currency match the consulate checklist. The amounts below remain the student's own money.
| Country | Requirement | Approx. in INR | Treatment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany | Blocked account €11,904 (€992 × 12) plus insurance | ₹12 to 14 lakh | Released monthly to the student after arrival |
| Austria | €722.58 × 12 (under 24) or €1,308.39 × 12 (24 and over) | ₹9.5 to 10.5 lakh | In the student's own account |
| France | €877.50 × 12 (€10,530) plus tuition balance | ₹11 to 12 lakh | Shown in the account; fully loan-funded files accepted |
| Italy | €10,179.85 for the year, six-month statements | ₹11 to 12 lakh | A disbursed loan visible in the account is accepted |
What MastersHelp does on the loan
Lender comparison
The file goes to the lenders most likely to sanction for the student's profile, so that rate, collateral and amount can be compared before accepting.
Collateral-free options
For recognised European public universities, private banks and NBFCs lend without property. MastersHelp identifies which lenders list the admitted university.
The file the credit team expects
Admission letter, cost-of-living letter, co-applicant income proof and the country's visa checklist, prepared in the format each lender's credit team reads. This is where most applications stall when students apply alone.
Disbursement timed to the visa
Into the blocked account (Germany) or the student's account (Austria, France, Italy), with the balance proof added to the visa file before the appointment.
Tax and subsidy
Interest paid on an education loan from a bank is fully deductible under Section 80E for up to eight years. Eligible families may also qualify for the Central Sector Interest Subsidy, which covers interest during the study period.
No additional charge
Loan help is part of the MastersHelp service. There is no separate fee for lender matching, the file or the follow-up.

Frequently asked questions
Is collateral required?
Not necessarily. Private banks and NBFCs lend without collateral for recognised universities, usually up to ₹40 lakh and in some cases ₹1.5 crore. Public-sector banks generally ask for collateral above ₹7.5 lakh in exchange for a lower rate.
Can the loan fund the blocked account or living funds?
Yes. All four countries accept a sanction letter or a disbursed balance as proof of funds. For Germany the lender disburses directly into the blocked account provider; for Austria, France and Italy into the student's account before the appointment.
When does repayment begin?
Most lenders let you start repaying after your course ends plus a grace period of six to twelve months. Interest builds up during that time, so paying it monthly where possible reduces the total cost.
Is there a tax benefit?
Interest paid on an education loan from a bank or notified institution is deductible under Section 80E of the Income Tax Act for up to eight years, with no upper limit on the amount.
How long does sanction take?
NBFCs: one to two weeks. Private banks: two to three weeks. Public-sector banks: three to six weeks, depending on collateral valuation. MastersHelp starts the file as soon as the admission letter arrives.
Does MastersHelp charge for loan help?
No. Lender matching, the document file and follow-up to disbursement are part of the service.
