Step by step

The right university

Germany has three main types of public higher education institution. Universities (Universitäten), including the nine technical universities of the TU9 group, are research-oriented and award doctorates. Universities of applied sciences (Hochschulen für angewandte Wissenschaften) are practice-oriented and usually include an industry semester. Colleges of art and music admit by portfolio or audition.

Admission requirements, deadlines and language rules are set by each institution and vary between programmes at the same institution. Several federal states charge no tuition; Baden-Württemberg charges non-EU students €1,500 per semester, which is noted during selection.

The right programme

Germany has more than 2,000 Masters courses taught in English. The national websites list them, but each university decides for itself whether your Indian degree is accepted for a particular course. A CGPA that is enough at one university may be below the cut-off at another. A six-semester degree may be accepted in one place and refused in another. A course that looks open may have already closed for students from outside the EU.

MastersHelp finds the courses you can really get into. We check your marksheets against the entry rules of every course in your field, convert your grades the way uni-assist and the university will, and confirm the deadlines on the university's own website. From all the courses in your field, we narrow down to the ones where you have a real chance, and then to the five best fits. We prepare full applications for those five.

Requirements and verification

APS certificate. The Akademische Prüfstelle (Academic Evaluation Centre) at the German Embassy in New Delhi verifies the academic documents of Indian students. The certificate is needed for the student visa. The fee is ₹18,000 and processing takes four to eight weeks. MastersHelp prepares the document set, the application, the courier dispatch and the follow-up correspondence.

VPD. The Vorprüfungsdokumentation, issued by uni-assist, converts Indian grades into the German grading scale and confirms formal eligibility for a specific university. Many universities require it before an application is reviewed. It is issued per university and takes four to six weeks in peak season.

dMAT. The digital Master Test is a standardised aptitude test for graduate students, required for all students from 2026. It is taken at authorised centres in India at a cost of €150. MastersHelp gives dMAT coaching as part of its preparation support.

Language requirements

English-taught Masters programmes generally require IELTS 6.5 overall (some programmes 6.0 or 7.0), or an equivalent TOEFL score. German-taught programmes require German at level C1 (TestDaF or DSH).

MastersHelp gives IELTS preparation as part of its service: a 28-day programme of daily one-hour live online classes, post-class question sessions with recordings, mock tests and study materials, and guidance on exam registration. The IELTS examination fee (about ₹19,000) is paid to the test provider.

Application procedure

Applications are submitted either through uni-assist, a central service used by many universities, or directly through the university's own portal. Deadlines for the winter semester (October) commonly fall between 15 May and 15 July; for the summer semester (April), between 15 November and 15 January. Programmes with an aptitude test or interview may close earlier.

The statement of purpose is read closely by admissions committees, and several universities screen uploaded documents for generic or machine-generated text. MastersHelp prepares a separate statement for each of the five shortlisted universities, written individually by a writer with prior experience at a European embassy, and reviewed with the student before submission. We also prepare a European-style CV.

Costs of education and living

Public universities charge a semester contribution of about €150 to €350, which includes a regional public transport ticket and student services. There is no tuition fee in most federal states.

For the visa, students must show living funds of €11,904 for the first year (€992 per month), deposited in a blocked account with a provider such as Expatrio, Fintiba or Coracle. After registration in Germany the amount is released to the student at €992 per month. Health insurance (public student cover of about €130 per month, or a private policy) is needed for enrolment and the visa.

Typical first-year outlay: deposit for a place to stay, and first rent about ₹50,000; flight about ₹50,000; initial purchases about ₹1 lakh. Figures vary by city.

Visa

After admission the student applies for a national visa for study purposes through VFS Global in the relevant consular district. Required documents include the admission letter, APS certificate, proof of the blocked account, health insurance confirmation, academic documents and a motivation letter. Appointment availability is limited in the summer months, so the appointment is booked as soon as the admission letter is received.

MastersHelp prepares the document set in the order of the consulate checklist, books the appointment, and conducts a mock interview. The visa fee (€75) and the VFS service charge (about ₹10,000 in total) are paid by the student.

First steps in Germany

Place to stay. Student halls run by the Studierendenwerk are the least expensive option and should be applied for at the time of admission. MastersHelp also searches through its alumni network and verified private providers, and assists with the rental agreement needed for the visa file.

Registration and enrolment. Within two weeks of arrival the student registers at the residents' registration office (Anmeldung), opens a bank account, activates the blocked account payments, converts the visa to a residence permit, and completes enrolment (Immatrikulation) at the university.

Internships. Most Masters programmes include an industry placement. MastersHelp gives an initial internship search in the student's field, application guidance and CV tailoring after arrival.

Frequently asked questions

Is there really no tuition at public universities?

In most federal states, yes. Students pay a semester contribution of about €150 to €350. Baden-Württemberg charges €1,500 per semester for non-EU students.

How long does the APS take?

Four to eight weeks after the complete file is received. It is started at the beginning of the process so that it does not delay the visa.

Why is a VPD needed?

Many universities only review applications that carry a uni-assist pre-check confirming eligibility and the converted grade. It is issued per university.

Is the blocked account money lost?

No. It is the student's living money for the first year and is released at €992 per month after arrival.

Do I need German?

Not for admission to an English-taught programme. German at A1 or A2 helps with part-time work and daily life, and MastersHelp points students to suitable courses.
